Summary
Erick Hawkins leads a class discussion of the students' expressive movement studies; the discussion includes the role of a work's title; Igor Stravinsky's and Martha Graham's use of poetic titles, such as Graham's Primitive mysteries; and pure mime compared with abstract suggestion. It appears that the recording is halted during the students' demonstrations of their studies.

  • Class taught by Erick Hawkins on June 27, 1985; this recording is the ninth in a series of recordings of classes on dance composition taught by Hawkins at New York University, New York City. The recording contains exchanges of questions and answers between Hawkins and the class participants, including David Sears, who recorded the class.
  • The sound quality overall is good. The recording is marred by occasional extraneous noise, and the sound quality of the questions and comments of the students is poor at times.
