- John Dougherty speaks about the central role dance has played in his life, beginning with his childhood training in social dance; his introduction to Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis through articles in Dance magazine and becoming a student at the Denishawn School [of Dancing] in New York City; St. Denis as a person and as an artist, including her great spirituality; Isadora Duncan's points of similarity and difference with St. Denis; his plans for a Denishawn festival at UCLA [University of California, Los Angeles]; defining natural movement; defining primitive dance; economic aspects of dancing; more on his current professional activities and past performing career; his thoughts on the effect of modern dance on American culture, in particular the contributions of Shawn and St. Denis.
