- Summary
- David Vaughan, archivist for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, lectures on the career and choreographic works of Merce Cunningham. Vaughan discusses Cunningham's early dance training and performances in tap and ballroom dance; Cunningham's studies at the Cornish School and first meeting with composer John Cage; Cunningham's years as a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company and his first original choreographic works, including the solo Root of an unfocus, and The seasons, created for Ballet Society; the influence of contemporary action painting on Cunningham's ideas about space and composition; the influence of Zen Buddhism on Cunningham's work and his use of chance procedures; the 1962 work Collage; Cunningham's experience teaching at Black Mountain College; the beginnings of the Cunningham Dance Company, and early works created for the company; the dancing styles of Carolyn Brown and Viola Farber; the company's world tour in 1964 and increasing recognition from the public and dance establishment; the development of Cunningham's Events; changes in the personnel of the company; Cunningham's collaborations with artists including Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns; the development of Cunningham's dance technique and the increasing virtuosity of his dancers; Cunningham's work for television and videodance works; Cunningham's own dance roles in his works, his solo Tango, and his personal views on dance. The lecture includes slides and commentary on the following works: Root of an unfocus, The seasons, Collage, Banjo, Minutiae, Suite for five, Antic meet, Summerspace, Crises, Squaregame, Travelogue, Inlets, Fractions.
