- Summary
- On the television program Dialogues, Nancy Sidhu interviews David Vaughan during his residency as lecturer at the University of California, Riverside. Vaughan discusses his job as archivist for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; his work on the book Merce Cunningham: fifty years; the growing recognition for Cunningham's work, culminating in his receiving Kennedy Center honors and a MacArthur fellowship; Cunningham's collaboration with composer John Cage; Cunningham's special dramatic qualities as a performer; Vaughan's interests in the choreography of Cunningham and of Frederick Ashton; connections between ballet and modern dance; dance as a specialized activity vs. a common recreation; the motivation for and difficulties of dance as a career; and dance injuries. Finally Vaughan summarizes his current activities in California and upcoming activities in New York.
