- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (124 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- This program begins with a solo dance performance by Steve Paxton. Paxton introduces the piece, in which he improvises to Bach's Goldberg variations. The recording of the performance is very dark in some parts.
- The performance is followed by a panel discussion titled That fleeting moment when you feel alive, in which dancers discuss their experiences working with Merce Cunningham. Moderator Janice Ross introduces and summarizes the careers of the panelists. The panelists give personal statements about how they began dancing, how they first encountered and became involved with Cunningham, and what they took away from the experience. Paxton, Komar and Attix comment on structure and emotional content in Cunningham's work. Charlip, Brown and Jenkins discuss the difference between performing Cunningham's work and watching it from the audience, and the difficulty of resetting his works on new dancers. Komar comments on Cunningham's use of time. The recording ends abruptly before the question-and-answer session.
