Summary
This panel discussion focusses on Merce Cunningham's use of film and video to record his choreography. Sam Miller, executive director of Jacob's Pillow, gives a brief introduction and speaks about preservation and archives at Jacob's Pillow. Leslie Hansen Kopp, director of Preserve Inc., introduces and moderates the program. David Vaughan speaks about the history of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company archives and his own involvement with the company, and discusses the scope and purpose of the archives and Cunningham's views on dance notation. A panel discussion follows. Elliot Caplan speaks about his role as the company's video director, the difficulties involved in filming dance, and Cunningham's views on dance for camera. Caplan comments on clips from various videodance works by Cunningham; the television monitor on which the clips are shown is not visible in this recording (for the compilation of clips, see *MGZIDVD 5-491). Caplan discusses Cunningham's practice of recording his works after their initial performances. Carolyn Brown discusses her experience appearing in the premieres of dances and learning directly from Cunningham; Chris Komar discusses the use of video for preserving, teaching and reviving Cunningham's choreography. The recording ends abruptly.
