- Summary
- The first part of the program is a reading of John Cage's radio play James Joyce, Marcel Duchamp, Erik Satie: an alphabet. In the second part of the program, Merce Cunningham is interviewed on stage by David Gere. Cunningham discusses his admiration for Erik Satie; John Cage's work ethic and interest in the mesostic form; Cage's choice of characters in the play; Cunningham's feelings about Joyce and Duchamp; Cunningham's recollections of his first dance teacher, Mrs. [Maude] Barrett; his feelings about the death of Cage; the making of CRWDSPCR; Cunningham's use of chance operations in his choreography; Black Mountain College as an interdisciplinary learning environment; and the making of BIPED. The interview ends with a celebration of Cunningham's upcoming 80th birthday.
