Summary
David Vaughan speaks about Merce Cunningham's career in dance. Vaughan's talk is structured around four events that Cunningham stated had influenced his choreographic development: his collaborations with John Cage; his use of chance procedures in creating choreography; his work with film and video; and his use of Life Forms computer software. In addition to discussing these topics, Vaughan summarizes the history of the Cunningham Dance Company and briefly discusses the works appearing on the upcoming evening's program: Pond way, Winterbranch, and CRWDSPCR. Finally, Vaughan shows an excerpt from the film CRWDSPCR (directed by Elliot Caplan), including footage of Cunningham coaching his company in a studio dress rehearsal and comments from dancers on the difficulty of performing Cunningham's choreography.
