- Summary
- Broadway musical contractor Seymour Red Press discusses his career with author Steven Suskin, starting with his early days as a big band musician and tracing his professional path through work as a studio session player and the switch to working in theater in the 1950s. Press discusses his early days as a Broadway pit musician, then describes the work of a music contractor, i.e. the person responsible for assembling and maintaining orchestras for stage musicals. He examines the impact of various technological changes on his job, such as the miking of performers and the instruments themselves, and examines other issues that affect a pit orchestra during the run of a show.
