Andrew Stein speaks with theatrical producer Joseph Papp about arts and culture in New York City. Papp speaks about the high ticket prices for Broadway shows; his recent decision to refuse funding from the City's department of Cultural Affairs; government subsidy of the arts abroad and in comparison with the United States; the Reagan administration's cuts in arts funding; the possibility of a national theater, modeled on Britain's example, for the United States; the need for government support of small arts organizations; the recent concert given by Diana Ross in the Sheep Meadow in Central Park, which attracted over 600,000; the future development of the Broadway theater district. At 12 min. Papp responds to viewers' questions on various topics, including Actors' Equity control over British theatrical exports and exchanges; his failure to support a recent plan for an artists' housing project; the subsidization of theater owners' real estate taxes in order to reduce ticket prices.
