  • Established in 1976 by Oscar Ciccone and Cecilia Vega, the Festival Latino in New York became part of the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1984. Billed in a 1988 program as "the most important cultural event in the United States of America," the festival supported the full range of Latino dramaturgy in the U.S. with work intended to engage the contemporary Latino audience and promote cross cultural understanding. Annual festivals featured a mix of theater, dance, music and film from Spain, Portugal and Latin America, performed in Spanish, English, Italian and Portuguese, or in combination.
