- Summary
- This panel discussion on Merce Cunningham's work is conducted in Italian. David Vaughan speaks in English, and his remarks are translated by an interpreter. Vaughan speaks about his association with Cunningham and the Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation archives, which he developed and manages; Cunningham's use of the Life Forms computer program and its influence on his work. Vaughan responds to questions from the audience about Cunningham's departure from Martha Graham's company and launching of his solo career; Cunningham's collaborations with composers and the relationship between music and dance in his work. After the panel discussion, David Vaughan records spoken introductions for three Cunningham choreographic works to be performed during the company's stay in Italy, CRWDSPCR, Rondo, and BIPED, and comments on Cunningham's philosophy of dance.
