Summary
The program opens with a 10-min orchestral/vocal composition by Fred Ho. Excerpts from Journey beyond the west, a dance theater work with live vocal and instrumental music, are interspersed with commentary by Charles Wuorinen and Fred Ho. Ho discusses his blending of Chinese and American musical influences, the nature of Chinese vocal music, the Chinese folklore on which Journey beyond the west was based, the influences of Chinese opera, martial arts and American pop culture in the staging of the work.
