- Summary
- Collection depicts health and medical care activities and facilities servicing African Americans, mainly in New York City, from 1861 to the 1970s with the bulk of the images dating from the 1920s to the 1950s.
- The collection consists of exterior and interior views of hospitals including a series of images of Harlem Hospital, New York, N.Y., (1929) showing its exterior, wards and operating room as well as group portraits of some of its medical staff. Another series shows staff and patients engaged in narcotic rehabilitation activities at Riverside Hospital (1950s). The collection also depicts New Yorkers participating in a tuberculosis-screening program (1940s). Included is a view of of the Syendam Hospital annual dinner.
