- August Wilson (1945-2005) was an African-American playwright who won two Pulitzer Prizes, in 1987 for Fences and in 1990 for The piano lesson, as well as a Drama Desk Award, the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, a Tony Award, and other honors. He was perhaps best-known for his cycle of ten plays documenting African-American life in 20th century America. On Oct. 16, 2005, two weeks after his death, the Virigina Theatre was renamed the August Wilson Theatre in his honor.
