Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (93 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
The first excerpt on this disc is from a panel discussion titled That fleeting moment when you feel alive, in which dancers discuss their experiences working with Merce Cunningham. Panelists Remy Charlip and Carolyn Brown give personal statements about how they began dancing, how they first encountered and became involved with Cunningham, and what they took away from the experience. The remainder of the disc contains a dialogue between Merce Cunningham and John Cage, moderated by David Vaughan. Cage and Cunningham share reminiscences about their early touring experiences and initial reactions to their work. Cage discusses the method by which he and Cunningham collaborate, and speaks about his music for the new piece Inventions, and Cunningham speaks about the choreographic structure and decor for the work; Cunningham also discusses the development of the choreography for August Pace. Cage describes his recent trip to Leningrad, during which he met designer Sergei Bougaev (known as "Africa") who designed the decor for August pace. Cage speaks about the time he and Cunningham spent at Black Mountain College. A question-and-answer session follows. Cage and Cunningham discuss their working process and daily routines; Cunningham discusses dramatic content vs. pure movement in his work; Cage speaks about the relation between his graphic art and musical compositions.
