Discussion includes how they got the idea to create a musical based on fairy tales; their use of fairy tale versions by the Brothers Grimm; how they structured the show; the show's woods setting and theme; getting financial backing and workshopping the production at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego; Sondheim's concept of "aloneness" as expressed in the musical; how Sondheim chooses his creative projects; the composer's work in relationship to that of the librettist, within a given project; Sondheim's working methods; Sondheim's musical influences, and the types of music used for various parts in the show.
