Summary
This program features a panel discussion on a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor at New York City Opera, interspersed with selections from the opera. The panelists discuss presentations of insanity in opera; the staging concept for this production (accompanied by slides); aspects of the score; the novel by Sir Walter Scott on which the opera was based. The singers comment on the characters they play, and the panelists discuss Lucia's mad scene; the incorporation of Jennifer Welch-Babidge's pregnancy into the staging of the opera; and Donizetti's insanity.
