In 1680, unable to tolerate further domination, Popay, a medicine man from San Juan Pueblo, instigated the retaliation. As the pueblos were dispersed over great distances and there was no means of synchronizing a revolt, running messengers, carrying knotted cords from tribe to tribe coordinated an attack." -- synopsis, Belinda James.
