Summary
"Carmen is a ballet in one act and 22 scenes performed without intermission. In a scenario devised by Kent Stowell and Francia Russell the story line runs loosely parellel to Bizet's opera, inspired by the novella of Prosper Mérimée. With the familiar drama taking place in the context of a contemporary ballet company, the action alternates between studio rehearsals and performances onstage. Throughout the work dancers move between roles in the ballet of Carmen and the offstage drama of their relationships. In a number of scenes development of dramatic action and classroom work occur simultaneously while in others either rehearsal or performance sequences carry the protagonists inexorably to the tragic conclusion.
