Description
1 sound cassette (ca. 74 min.)
Summary
  • Side A (ca. 49 min.). Jane D. Schwartz leads the class in a discussion of a performance they had just seen of Swan lake (in a version choreographed by David Blair after Ivanov and Petipa), as danced by American Ballet Theatre, with Cynthia Gregory in the role of Odette-Odile and Bruce Marks (?) in the role of Siegfried (ca. 20 min.). Schwartz speaks about the ballet La sylphide, primarily with reference to Auguste Bournonville's version, including the story of the ballet; the score by Hermann Løwenskjold; the conflict between the real and the fantastic, as expressed in the costumes, the lighting, and the choreography; the diabolic element characteristic of romantic ballet; reads aloud Erik Bruhn's remarks on the character of James; the inability to accept reality as characteristic of French romanticism (ca. 45 min.). Schwartz speaks about the ballet Giselle, including the story of the ballet; the relationship of Albrecht and Giselle as illustrating the struggle between reality and fantasy; reads aloud Erik Bruhn's remarks regarding the major difference between the characters of Albrecht and James [ends abruptly].
  • Side B (ca. 25 min.). Schwartz continues to speak about Giselle, including the background of the first production, in 1841 [choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot for the Paris Opera]; Perrot as a dancer; Carlotta Grisi, the first Giselle [break]; the origins of the story; the score by Adolphe Adam, including the two leitmotifs that express Giselle's love of dance and love of Albrecht, respectively [ends abruptly].
