Schwartz speaks about the ballet of the nuns in Act III of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Robert le diable; the original production of the ballet La sylphide, choroegraphed by Fillippo Taglioni with a libretto by Adolphe Nourrit, including the story of the ballet; expression of the ballet's themes in the choreography and costumes; Marie Taglioni's performance as the sylph; August Bournonville's background and career; Bournonville's choreograping of La sylphide with the original libretto and a new score, by Hermann Løwenskjold; Lucile Grahn; the dual aspects of love in La sylphide; reads aloud comments by Erik Bruhn on the character James; the use of stage tricks in the original Bournonville version; more on the Bournonville's choreography [break]; more on the partnering in La sylphide; the Løwenskjold score, including its orchestration by John Lanchbery for the American Ballet Theatre version [choreographed by Bruhn after Bournonville]; more on the story of the ballet [ends abruptly].

This is cassette 12 of a series of recordings of classes on dance history and criticism, conducted at the New School for Social Research in New York City, between Feb. 1973 and Dec. 1975, which are cataloged under classmark *MGZTC 3-1405.
