  • Side A (ca. 49 min.). [Begins abruptly.] Jane D. Schwartz speaks about the romantic ballet, including male and female technique before and after the introduction of pointe shoes by Marie Taglioni; the relationship of technique and costume to romanticism in ballet; the use of local color, including the incorporation of national dances and popular songs; the use of staging, scenery, and lighting to enhance the element of mystery; the ballet of the nuns in Act III of Giacomo Meyerbeer's opera Robert le diable. Schwartz speaks about the ballet Giselle, including the story and the character of Albrecht; the first production, in 1841 [choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot for the Paris Opera]; Perrot as a dancer; his relationship with Carlotta Grisi; the origins of the story of Giselle; the score by Adolphe Adam, including his use of leitmotifs; Perrot's corresponding choreographic leitmotifs; the score's critical success; Jean Coralli, as a choreograper [ca. 40 min. through 48 min. the sound quality, especially of the music, is poor]. Ends abruptly.

This is cassette 14 of a series of recordings of classes on dance history and criticism, conducted at the New School for Social Research in New York City, between Feb. 1973 and Dec. 1975, which are cataloged under classmark *MGZTC 3-1405.
  • The sound quality on this recording of the speaker's voice is good for the most part, but only fair to poor in the last ca. 10 min. of side A. In addition, the recording is marred by extraneous noise. The sound quality of the recordings of music played is generally poor, especially the recordings played in the last 10 min. of side A, which are highly distorted.
