Description
1 sound cassette (ca. 102 min.)
Summary
  • Side A (ca. 51 min.). Upon the request of the instructor, Robert J. Pierce, the students introduce themselves and their reasons for taking the class [short gap]; Pierce leads a discussion of dance criticism [occasionally referring to articles and reviews that had been distributed at an earlier class], including topics such as the influence of one's peers on one's own writing; objectivity and criticism; innovation in choreography as a goal in itself; the manner in which foreign dance companies are presented in the U.S. [ends abruptly].
  • Side B (ca. 51 min.). Robert J. Pierce continues to lead a discussion of dance criticism [for the most part, the sound quality of the students' voices is poor, at times unintelligible], including topics such as the controversy surrounding Flemming Flindt's ballet The triumph of death; whether critics influence the public, including an anecdote about Pierce's review of Priscilla Colville's work Scavenger, and Pierce's thoughts on Clive Barnes' reviews; criticism as literature, including references to and quotations from an article by Jill Johnston; an article by Deborah Jowitt about a performance of Lipizzaner horses, from which Pierce quotes at length; critics whose writing he recommends; a student reads aloud her review of a performance by the Joffrey Ballet of John Cranko's ballet Jeu de cartes followed by comments from Pierce and the students [ends abruptly].
