  • Sophie Tucker (b. Jan 13, 1884; d. Feb. 9, 1966) was a Russian-born popular American entertainer. She began her career as a singer in her father's Connecticut restaurant, and then went on to sing in music halls, vaudeville, and burlesque. She gained fame during World War I, and continued her career as a singer, actress, and comedian for many years in nightclubs, films, radio, and television in the United States and abroad. She was also a philanthropist, supporting numerous causes related to the American military, the State of Israel, and performers, among others.
