- Summary
- Documentary about St. Petersburg, Russia, known as Leningrad at the time the film was made. Footage of the city is interspersed with interviews, historical recreations and archival footage. The documentary covers the history of the city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: the Napoleonic invasion and the influence of French liberal ideas; the career of Pushkin; the liberation of the serfs; events leading up to the Revolution of 1917; the seige of Leningrad during World War II, and the postwar restoration of the city. The documentary also explores the architecture, art and industry of the city.
- Television segment about Rudolf Nureyev's production of the ballet Manfred, performed by the Paris Opera Ballet, based on Lord Byron's life and work and set to Tchaikovsky's Manfred symphony. Footage of rehearsals directed by Nureyev are interspersed with excerpts of an interview with Nureyev.
