  • Robert T. Johnson was first elected District Attorney of Bronx County on November 8, 1988, and took office on January 1, 1989. He was re-elected to a four-year term first in November 1991 and again in November 1995. Previously, in August 1986, he was appointed a Judge of the New York City Criminal Court, and was promoted quickly to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. Prior to his appointment as a Judge, he served for eight years as a Bronx Assistant District Attorney. After trying a number of cases in the Homicide Bureau, Mr. Johnson was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Major Offense Bureau and then promoted again to Chief of the Narcotics Bureau. Before he became an Assistant District Attorney, Mr. Johnson worked for three years as a Criminal Defense Attorney with the Legal Aid Society. When Robert T. Johnson was elected Bronx District Attorney, he became the first African American to hold the office of District Attorney in the state of New York.
