Summary
Buttons manufactured between 1950 and 1990 bearing designs and/or slogans and statements concerning social and political issues primarily in South Africa, other African countries and Cuba. African subjects include the African National Congress, Ghana and the political struggles in Namibia, Biafra and Angola. South African buttons call for the end of "apartheid," divestment and the call to free political prisoners. Some feature photographs or artist's sketches of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Other buttons brandish statements such as "End the U.S. Blockade of Cuba".
