- Summary
- In the morning session of the Eastern Zone meeting of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Brother Thomas and Ben McLaurin comment on problems on the line out of Asheville, North Carolina and the abolishment of a district. M. P. Webster adds to this by mentioning the lack of work all over the country, not only in Asheville, and says the bottom is dropping out of the business paralleled by the lack of jobs. In the afternoon session dedicated to the Ladies Auxiliary, Ben McLaurin and Grace Rembert, president of the Auxiliary, make brief statements followed by A. Philip Randolph who talks about changes in the railroad business due mostly to the automation revolution. This revolution, he says, will require new skills, thus the development of the Negro American Labor Council to keep kids in high school and to help prepare them for careers. He also stresses the need to bring more tax payers' dollars into Negroes' schools. It is announced that the Ladies Auxiliary will become affiliated with the AFL-CIO's auxiliary. Grace Rambert opens the meeting for discussion and Ben McLaurin and M. P. Webster contribute remarks.
