  • The Institute of the Black World (IBW) was a an independent, non-profit educational institution established in 1969. It was a community of Black scholars, artists, teachers and organizers who were actively involved in the struggle to transform the character of Black education and whose ultimate goal was to serve as an agent of social transformation for American society.
  • The IBW Summer Research Symposium of 1971 and 1974 was a series of lectures and discussions by Black scholars. The Symposium's primary objective was to give meaning to the history of Black America and to understand its relationship to the present and future through research and advocacy.
