Summary
Collection contains some material pertaining to the New York State Colonization Society, supported by the Phelps Stokes family, which supported the founding of Liberia as a new African state for repatriating blacks. Records include correspondence, minutes, and financial documents pertaining to the colonization of Afro-Americans, Liberia, and African education. Phelps-Stokes Fund records consist of correspondence, minutes, financial documents including ledgers, statements, and vouchers; legal documents including wills, agreements, and mortgages; literary productions including manuscripts, speeches, special reports, and occasional papers; printed matter including pamphlets, brochures, clippings, press releases, and programs; maps; blueprints; lists; and photographs. Included are records concerning the administration and business mangement of the Phelps-Stokes Fund (PSF), matters concerning the PSF's Board of Trustees; "charter programs," i.e. programs specified in the original act of incorporation of PSF, conferences on race relations, foundations, general funding, and the archives.

Non-profit foundation established in 1911. The Fund's act of incorporation specified that the Fund be used for "the erection and improvement of tenement house dwellings in the city of New York for the poor...," and "the education of Negroes, both in Africa and the United States, North American Indians and needy and deserving white students."
The Washington Bureau was established in 1972 as a liason office of the Phelps-Stokes Fund and by 1975 was responsible for coordinating all domestic programs of the Fund.
