- Barbara Sparti introduces the speaker, Lilian Karina. Karina speaks, occasionally using slides of documents and photographs to illustrate her lecture, about her research regarding modern dance in Germany during the National Socialist period, including her documentary sources, the extensive correspondence between Mary Wigman, [Gret] Palucca, and Rudolf von Laban with the staff of Joseph Goebbels; sources of modern dance in Germany, including nationalism, military traditions, nature-worship, and mysticism; the relationship between certain dance schools and racism and antisemitism, including the Duncan school [Die Elizabeth Duncan-Schule]; Laban's correspondence with Goebbels shortly after the National Socialists came to power; the voluntary demonstration of antisemitic policies by various dance schools before they became legally-required; more on Laban and his relationship with Goebbels and the National Socialist government; the denunciation by Wigman's school of a dance critic as non-Aryan; Gret Palucca's relationship with the National Socialist government; more on the willing demonstration of antisemitism by leading choreographers and dancers; the aesthetic values and styles approved and encouraged by the National Socialists; topics and art movements that were the object of censorship, including Expressionism, Cubism, and Dadaism; the dancers Valeska Gert and Anita Berber; other prohibited topics in art and dance [gap]; more on prohibited topics, from homosexuality to Labonotation; the end of World War II and the inflow of various dance types from the U.S.; Karina's hopes regarding her contribution to history. - Recording of a lecture by Lilian Karina titled The Dance in the Political Storms of Our Time given at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center in New York City, on June 12, 1993. Barbara Sparti is the moderator. The lecture was part of a three-day joint conference of The Congress on Research in Dance and The Society of Dance History Scholars, titled "Of, by, and for the people," hosted by the Dance Collection of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, on June 11-13, 1993. Karina co-authored, with Marion Kant, a book on the subject of her lecture: Hitler's dancers: German modern dance and the Third Reich; translated by Jonathan Steinberg (c. 2003), cataloged in the Library's collection under the call number *MGRL 02-1119.
