Summary
This program focuses on the 2000 New York premiere production of Ernst Krenek's twelve-tone 1945 chamber opera by the company Elysium - Between Two Continents. The panel discussion is interspersed with excerpts from the opera, staged with costumes and some set pieces. Topics of discussion include Elysium's season-long focus on works by artists who fled Nazi Europe and settled in the United States, and Krenek's work in evolving musical idioms. The program also features a performance by vocalist Julia Koci and pianist John W. Simmons of Krenek's 1926 song cycle O lacrimosa, with text by Rainer Maria Rilke.
