- Summary
- This program traces George Balanchine's 20th-century development and reinvention of 19th-century classical ballet style as established by choreographer Marius Petipa at the Imperial Ballet. Host Suki Schorer of the School of American Ballet explains the contrasts between the Petipa and Balanchine styles, differences that are demonstrated first in barre exercises then as comparisons between choreographed pieces. Petipa and Balanchine's versions of the variation from act I of Raymonda are danced consecutively then side by side to demonstrate differences in posture, movement, and pointe work from one choreographer to the other. The same comparison is applied to Ivanov and Balanchine's versions of the sugar plum pas de deux from The nutcracker, with emphasis placed on Balanchine's increase in pace and changes in relationship of dance to music. Other performances demonstrate Balanchine's embrace of an athletic American style and neo-classical techniques.
