- Summary
- This program focuses on Xtravaganza, a new mixed media production by the performance company The Builders Association. Company founder and director Marianne Weems briefly discusses and shows filmed excerpts from three earlier pieces, Master Builder, Faust, and Jet Lag, all of which combine live performance with media. In excerpts from Xtravaganza, the company delves into the history of multimedia production by focusing on four theatrical pioneers and purveyors of spectacle: Steele MacKaye, director and designer of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show; dancer Loie Fuller, who used film projections in her pieces; theatrical impresario Florenz Ziegfeld; and film director-choreographer Busby Berkeley. Text is based on the writings of these four, and live performers interact with archival film clips and original footage. After the presentation, the panelists discuss the company's use of technology, and the process of collaboration that created the piece.
