- Description
- 1 videodisc (DVD) (NTSC) (90 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- This program includes panel discussions of two new productions from the 1998 New York City Opera season, interspersed with performances of arias and duets from the operas. The Emmeline panelists discuss adapting novelist Judith Rossner's source material, the opera's musical vernacular, Oedipal themes, and New England Industrial Revolution setting, and the innocence of the main character. The Paul Bunyan panelists discuss the collaboration between Britten and librettist and fellow Englishman W. H. Auden, who co-created the opera shortly after arriving in the United States in the late 1930s. They also talk about the work's musical eclecticism, its targeting of younger singers and audiences, and the set design of the New York City Opera production, which is partly inspired by painter Marsden Hartley.
