- Summary
- Emmy award winning actor Werner Klemperer discusses his career with interviewer Michall Jeffers. Klemperer speaks about his role as Colonel Klink on the television sitcom Hogans heroes, which ran on CBS from 1965 to 1971, including the show's wide syndication, his financial compensation via residuals, and why he believes his character is so well-liked. He also discusses the murder of his friend and co-star Bob Crane in the late 1970s; fleeing Hitler's Germany with his family, and growing up in the late 1930s in Hollywood in the home of his father the internationally known conductor Otto Klemperer; reconciling his acting roles with the events of his personal life; the film Judgment at Nuremberg, in which he played a Nazi judge, working with Spencer Tracy, Burt Lancaster and others; returning to Germany while working on the 1962 film Escape from East Berlin; his Tony nomination for the part of Herr Schultz in the musical Cabaret; his active involvement in the Actors' Equity union; his work as a performer of spoken parts for the opera; his friend, drama critic John Simon, currently under fire for statements he made in his review of the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival production A winter's tale.
