Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (81 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
This program focuses on the work of Chinese-born choreographer Shen Wei and his company, Shen Wei Dance Arts. A conversation with Shen Wei is interspersed with excerpts from three of the choreographer's dances. Shen Wei discusses his background in Chinese opera, painting, and calligraphy, and the ways in which those disciplines have informed his work as a choreographer. He also talks about the arrival of modern dance in China during the 1980s, and explains the widely varied impulses that inspired the work on view in the program, from the emotional, improvisatory character of Near the terrace, to the more structural, musically guided process that created The rite of spring. Live performances of excerpts from The rite of spring and Folding are preceded by brief film clips of other sections from the dances.
