Summary
This program features a panel discussion about Lar Lubovitch's new piece for American Ballet Theatre, ...smile with my heart, based on the music of Richard Rodgers. The panelists discuss the development of the ballet from the 2001 piece My funny valentine, and its unusual formal structure, which is likened to an upside-down triangle, starting with six dancers and ending with a pas de deux. The choreographer's collaboration with composer/arranger Laird on selecting the music and shaping it for dance is also discussed, as is the special skills required of a dance arranger. The ballet is presented in two segments interspersed with the panel discussion.
