- Summary
- This program features a panel discussion of the 2001 Broadway revival of Sondheim's Follies, interspersed with performances of song excerpts from the musical. The composer recalls the gestation of the 1971 show, which centers on a reunion of former Broadway chorus girs, and the origins of certain songs, including I'm still here, Losing my mind, The road you didn't take, and Broadway baby. He also discusses his attempts to experiment with fractured narrative and musical dissonance within the constraints of commercial theatre. The director talks about the dramatic elements that drew him to Follies, and the panelists also discuss how the show's themes of decline and regret are given added power by the casting of aging female performers.
