- Summary
- This program includes a discussion about and selections from composer Philippe Fénelon's new opera Salammbô, which premiered at Opéra Bastille under Francesca Zambello's direction. Zambello discusses and shows slides of the 2,700-seat Opéra National de Paris facility, and of two other operas she staged there, Turandot and Billy Budd. Performances of arias and duets from Salammbô are interspersed with a description of the opera, which is adapted by librettist Jean-Yves Masson from a Gustave Flaubert novel. Set during the Punic Wars, the story is of a Carthaginian warrior's daughter, who is also a priestess of the goddess Tanit. Zambello shows slides of the production and talks about the design approach, the challenge of creating a visual vernacular that can communicate to such a large audience, and the atonal musical language employed by Fénelon. In the panel discussion, the singers discuss the difficulties of preparing original roles in a new opera, and Golden explains how she came to be a last-minute choice to portray the title role.
