Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Ted Chapin, president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, discusses the history of the American musical theater, covering its origins in European operettas, the development of the classical "book " musical of the postwar period, and the choreographer/director driven musicals of the 1960s and 70s. Specific topics of discussion include his early exposure to musicals; the "meaning" of Broadway; theater owner and impressario Oscar Hammerstein I and his grandson lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II; mentorship in the theater; the musical Show boat; the music of Richard Rodgers and his professionalism and family life; the musical collaboration of Rodgers and Lorenz Hart; George Balanchine's choreography in the musical On your toes; the musical Pal Joey; the breakup of Rodgers and Hart, and Rodgers' collaboration with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein; the musical Oklahoma!; Irving Berlin; the choreography of Agnes De Mille; the musicals Carousel, Annie get your gun, South Pacific, The king and I, and The sound of music; the death of Oscar Hammerstein; director Harold Prince; choreographer Jerome Robbins; developments in the musical during the 1960s, including discussion of Hair and Fiddler on the roof; the Stephen Sondheim musicals Follies and Company; the contributions of director/choreographer Michael Bennett, and his musical A chorus line.
