- Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Composer/lyricist Jerry Herman discusses his early influences and career in the musical theater. Topics include the impression made on him by the Irving Berlin musical Annie get your gun, featuring the singing of Ethel Merman; his mother's piano renditions of Irving Berlin songs, and the influence of Berlin on Broadway; his early experiences playing show music and summers spent at Stissing Lake Camp in the Berkshire Mountains, which was run by his parents, both teachers; how he writes a new score; meeting composer Frank Loesser; his first meeting with producer David Merrick who asked him to write the music for Hello Dolly!; his experiences working on the show with Merrick, its star Carol Channing and director Gower Champion, and his writing of the song Before the parade passes by during the show's out-of-town tryout; the recording of Broadway music by recording artists; Carol Channing's role in Hello Dolly! as Dolly Levy, originally intended for Ethel Merman; his friendship with Merman; the appeal to women of the character of Mame Dennis in his musical Mame; the musical during the 1970s; his writing of La cage aux folles in 1983, and how the musical influenced public opinon about gays; what Broadway "means" to America.

- Broadway, the American musical, which aired on PBS in October 2004, is a documentary chronicling the entire history of the Broadway musical. Each of its six episodes covers a different era in American theater history, and features the Broadway shows and songs which defined the period. The series draws on feature films, television broadcasts, archive news footage, original cast recordings, still photos, diaries, journals, first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many of the principals involved in the development of the genre.
