Summary
This program features performances of Matinas do Natal and Missa pastoril para noite de Natal, two seasonal works by early 19th-century Brazilian composer José Mauricio Nunes Garcia. Conductor George Steel introduces the program, placing the music in its historical and liturgical context. Between the two pieces he briefly comments on the musical atmosphere of 1810 Rio de Janeiro, on Garcia's use of divided cellos and violas in Missa pastoril para noite de Natal, and on the pastoral music tradition.
