Summary
This program opens with most of the first act of the opera Black water, a work in progress with music by John Duffy and libretto by Joyce Carol Oates, who adapted her 1992 novel of the same title. During a panel discussion following the performance, Oates talks about adapting her language to rhythmic form, and Duffy discusses setting the English text for maximum clarity and understanding. The collaborators also address the story's parallels to the Sen. Edward Kennedy-Mary Jo Kopechne incident at Chappaquiddick. A brief segment from the opera's second act closes the program.
