- Summary
- This program starts with introductory remarks by Salzburg Festival director Gerard Mortier about stage director Robert Wilson. Wilson then delivers an hour-long talk about his theatrical experiences and ideas. He discusses his emphasis on movement and the visual aspect of theater, influential artists like George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, and John Cage, and how he called on these ideas and influences during rehearsals for his 1997 production of Pelléas et Melisande for Paris Opéra and the Salzburg Festival. He also discusses in great detail his collaboration with deaf child Raymond Andrews on the 1971 piece Deafman glance, and with autistic poet Christopher Knowles on several works, including A letter for Queen Victoria. The progam concludes with a question-and-answer session with the audience.
