- Summary
- This program is a companion to the publication Poetry speaks: hear great poets read their work from Tennyson to Plath, which includes texts and audio recordings of poets reciting their work. The program begins with recordings of Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker, and W. H. Auden. After some introductory remarks by Poetry speaks co-editor Elise Paschen, an Ogden Nash recording is followed by speaker Billy Collins, who discusses Nash and then recites several of his own poems. After the Gwendolyn Brooks recordings are played, Sonia Sanchez provides a remembrance and appreciation of Brooks, recites more of Brooks' poetry, and reads some of her own work. Following the recording of Walt Whitman's America, speaker Galway Kinnell elaborates on the recording's uncertain provenance, reads Jorge Luis Borges' poem about Whitman, Camden, 1892, and recites his own poem When the towers came down. The program concludes with recordings of Denise Levertov, Robert Frost, and Robert Hayden.
