- Description
- 1 videodisc (DVD) (NTSC) (86 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- After a two-minute backstage view of Dondoro puppeteer Hoichi Okamoto, the program begins with his performance of the traditional Japanese tale Keshin, a ritual dance between a fox and a woman using Shinto-era music and life-sized puppets. A panel discussion follows, in which panelists discuss the Japanese tradition of itinerant puppeteers, Okamoto's development of his plays and his puppetmaking techniques, his transformation of traditional forms, and the existence of his work outside conventional theatrical boundaries in Japan. The public program concludes with a performance of Kiyohime Mandara, another well known Japanese tale about a monk and his betrothed. The recording continues for about 15 minutes, as audience members approach the stage to speak with Okamoto and examine his materials.
