Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Novelist, playwright, screenwriter William Goldman, author of the book The season: a candid look at Broadway, talks about the theater. Topics of discussion include being deeply affected, along with the rest of the audience, by a scene from a production of Porgy and Bess he saw as a child in Chicago; the changing concept of a "hit" on Broadway, and falling asleep at a production of Cats in London; musicals as an "American" art form; Broadway songs as popular hits; what he views as the current period of "low talent" in the arts; the economics of producing shows on Broadway during the 1950s compared with the present trend of large-scale productions with long runs, which require large sums of money to produce; the "myth" of Broadway as a place that brings back memories of favorite music and performers like Fred Astaire; the financial risk of producing a show on Broadway; the difficulty of producing a musical on Broadway, and young composers' limited opportunities for success; the importance of incorporating the work of younger artists, like that of tap dancer Savion Glover, into the mix on Broadway; his most thrilling theatergoing moments seeing productions of West side story and Gypsy.
