Summary
This film about John Cage was created for French students preparing for the baccalaureate in music. Cage's career and innovations are explored through interviews with Cage (speaking English in some segments and French in others) and Pierre Boulez, performances of Cage compositions and demonstrations of pianos being prepared for prepared-piano compositions. The film explores Cage's biography, his early works for prepared piano, his interest in non-musical sound and silence, his collaborations with Merce Cunningham and Robert Rauschenberg, his use of chance operations, and his influence and philosophy. Included are performances of And the earth shall bear again, Bacchanale, and excerpts from Song books.
